Mochi Motion is a motion design studio launched in 2018 by Liesbeth Eeckman and myself. Our catalog consists of a wide range of styles and techniques, from handcrafted stop motion to glossy futuristic 3D. Our design philosophy playfully embraces this variety.
Mochi is a Japanese dessert based on rice flour and sweet jelly filling. It has the characteristic “Q” texture: soft, but somehow offering a little bit of chewy resistance at the same time. This experience is quite alien to most westerners. Some reject it outright for its weirdness. Others are intrigued and open up to its potential deliciousness.
Mochi Motion’s visual identity explores a candy colored world of tacky patterns, lush gradients and playful creatures that are cute but also a little uncanny. Our motion design rhythmically alternates between the smoothness of boutique mograph and the choppy impact of classic cel-animation. We tried to get as close as possible to a dynamic visual equivalent of the “Q” texture.
