Talisman Builder / spiritual toolkit / collectible stickers and wiki / canonicalia / 2023-ongoing

Talisman Builder is a modular spiritual toolkit based on collectible stickers. Each sticker is like a sigil or votive picture representing a particular spirit, demon or other supernatural entity. These stickers are meant to be stuck onto any object of choice to turn it into a talisman, an enchanted device allowing the owner to summon the depicted entity and bargain for its divine influence.
The glyphs on the stickers indicate how particular stickers interact. The precise combination of stickers determines whether the talisman invokes the entity’s generous support or its chaotic punishment. As such, any configuration of Talisman Builder stickers may function as a magic circle, a mandala or a tarot spread, or simply as a few more lucky charms to be added to an already richly bedazzled phone case.

Sticker interface

  1.  Glyph of the type of energy this entity contributes to the talisman.
  2. The name of the entity
  3. The type of energy that invokes this entity’s curse. The energy emitted by any other sticker on the same talisman is taken into account.
  4. The type of energy that invokes this entity’s blessing. The energy emitted by any other sticker on the same talisman is taken into account.
  5. The square of manifestation. Channels the energy of this sticker into the material world
  6. Neural floodgates. These lead the absorbed energies towards the square of manifestation.
  7. The number indicates a level of magnitude for the effects of the sticker’s curse and/or blessing (as indicated by the smaller left and right sockets). This number is arbitrary in practical spiritual usage, but functions as a power indicator in competitive situations. Letter prefixes correspond to the 4 suits of the Minor Arcana in tarot (Swords, Batons, Discs, Cups).
  8. Other entity-specific symbols may appear in this zone. There may be glyphs describing additional effects resulting from curses, blessings or even the mere invocation of the entity. There may also appear an indication of particular association with the entity, like a lunar phase, planetary sign, society or natural element. In the example Adatiel is an aerial spirit, so the symbol for the element air is depicted.
  9. The entity’s form. Artist rendition. Further pictorial symbolism may be embedded in the image, possibly requiring secret knowledge.

Spirit classification

a. Angels. Winged heavenly agents. They have a strong sense of morality and strive to maintain strict order. However, their enforcement of such order may come across as utter chaos to most other beings.

b. Eternals. Spirits that exist outside of linear time. They are usually somewhat indifferent to the frantic drama of lower dimensional life. Only when someone directly reaches out to them they react with puzzled amusement.

c. Unnatural spirits, aka demons. Spirits from another world. They are generally very powerful, cunning and vicious.

d. Humans. Essentially unremarkable natural beings, if not for the fact that spirits of all kinds seem to be attracted to them. This interaction is what seems to have propelled human evolution to what it is today.
When you’re handling a talisman, you automatically contribute one additional Human energy glyph to the talisman, for good or for ill.

e. Portals. The only category that encompasses a phenomenon, not a sentient being. Portals are pathways between spiritual realms. Some spirits require these to travel to the material world when talismanically summoned.

f. Natural spirits. Elementals and animalistic demons who govern (or are tied to) particular phenomena in the natural world. They are often quite gentle, if unprovoked.

g. Corporate spirits. Human-initiated superorganisms that have evolved into monstrous sentient demons, particularly during the recent capitalist eras in human history.
Any corporate logo on a talisman might contribute corporate energy.

h. Mycelial spirits. Another type of superorganism. They were once a subcategory of the natural spirits but have emancipated themselves into their own federation, with the support of many Angels, Eternals, Natural and Unnatural spirits.

i. Video Club. Unnatural spirits who can manipulate time and space, but only do so for their own entertainment. Previously known as Watcher Demons they’ve been around since ancient times and have been associated with the development of tools and language. Since the recent discovery of video technology they’ve renamed themselves after their latest obsession. Other spirits are powerless to do anything about it.

Example

A phone decorated with talismanic stickers. The owner of this talisman wishes foremost to invoke the powers of the gremlin Karrara, a natural spirit (as indicated by the green glyph bottom center) who would wreak havoc in the presence of an unnatural spirit (the dark glyph in the pink shadow cloud on the bottom left). To get on Karrara’s good side we need to summon no less than two other spirits. Karrara is a difficult gremlin to appease. These glyphs are in the orange star-burst, bottom right:

  • another natural spirit, the same category as Karrara himself,
  • and a mycelial spirit.

The required natural spirit needs to be a different sticker. Any sticker’s main glyph doesn’t count towards his own curse/bless requirements. We can add Adatiel. Adatiel will not curse us, since he too would only do so with an unnatural spirit present (bottom left). The talisman will now also invoke Adatiel’s benevolent influence in the presence of human energy. Simply holding the phone in one’s hand or close to the body will fulfill this condition. No additional stickers needed.

Finally we add Guushoriji, a kind of mushroom creature. Its central green glyph identifies it as a mycelial spirit. The conditions are met for the talisman to receive the positive influence of Karrara (and Adatiel when in human hands). Guushoriji does not contribute anything of its own. The addition of an angel would trigger its curse and a video club demon its blessing. But neither are present.

Project status: prototyping

Since 2023 a limited set of prototype stickers have been in circulation, mainly to test print quality, readability and sizing. The next steps involved finetuning the usage mechanics, as well as refining the visual language. With the v1.0 design finalized as of 2025, a new protoype print run should happen soon. From that point onward new stickers could be released regularly in a perpetual beta process.

For now, there is no distribution model in place, but protoype stickers will be available upon written request.

Anyone interested in participating in the development is welcome to reach out. Especially leads for production infrastructure and distribution (ie printing services, occult retailers, collectors’ guilds etc) would help a lot.

The spirits

The pantheon of spirits depicted on the stickers is in continuous development. Preceding the creation of each sticker is an elobarate design and research process. Some spirits are rooted in existing folklore, others are completely original. The latter ones in particular start out as standalone sketches and illustrations. Those allow me to get to know the spirits well beforehand. I explore what they represent, what their personality is like and how they fit in the larger world of Talisman Builder.

In time, each spirit’s lore will be documented in a Talisman Builder wiki. For now, there are a few of the early artworks from the pantheon in the gallery over here.
